Blackmagic Design Intensity Pro

Intensity Pro is the first card to combine the high quality of HDMI capture and playback with the wide compatibility of analog component, NTSC, PAL and S-Video and analog audio capture and playback. It enables users to capture directly from the HD camera's image sensor, bypassing the video compression chip for true uncompressed video quality. Now users can go beyond the quality limits of HDV for editing, design and authoring with Intensity Pro.

Intensity Pro can be connected to any big screen television or video projector for incredible edit monitoring. Current computers don't have the processing speed to render complex multi later real time effects in HDV playing back to FireWire cameras. Intensity solves this problem by outputting video on HDMI and analog outputs for big screen monitoring in both SD or HD formats.

Videoguys System Recommendations for HDV editing

Before we recommend any specific NLE for HDV, we need to underst& that all this extra resolution requires VERY powerful computers to process. For 720p productions you will be able to get by with a single processor system, but for 1080i resolution you will need to get a dual core or dual processors. For the very best results a dual dual-core workstation is the way to go.

With the introduction of the latest dual-core processors you can now get a blazing fast machine, more than capable of h&ling HDV footage for well under $3,000. In fact, you can build your own Intel Core 2 Duo based machine for about $2,000!! Check out our DIY5 article for all the details.

HDV System Recommendation #1 - Go with a dual-core workstation

You're going to need rock solid stability & perormance from your HDV editing system. That's why you want a Workstation class machine. It takes some serious horsepower to be able to push all the pixels & create the spectacular videos you are planning to produce. That really taxes the CPU, memory, storage & overall capabilities of your system. Do not cut corners. Forget about minimum specs, you want to get the most powerful machine you can afford, loaded with RAM & very fast storage. You basically have 3 options here:

  1. Get an HP workstation like the xw4400 (single dual core processor) or xw8400 (dual dual coreprocessor), or a Dell Precision 690 dual dual core workstation. The HP will cost you more, but in the long run it will be worth it. The Dell machine is a littel less expensive, & you won't have to sacrifice on performance. That said, you'll still be paying a premium.
  2. Get a turnkey NLE solution from an expert NLE integrator. You can follow this link to a list of turnkey providers recommended by the Videoguys. All of the companies featured on this page make excellent NLE workstations, fully loaded & optimized for long format video editing.
  3. You can certainly build your own computer. You can & should use our DIY articles as a guideline. Make sure you have adequate power supply (minimum 400 Watts, 500+ Watts is better) & plenty of cooling & airflow inside the box.

Whichever way you go, here is a very general guideline on the specs to put in it.

HDV Workstation Recommendations
Processor
RAM
OS
Graphics
Card
System Drive
Video
Storage
Single Dual-Core Processor 720p HDV editing AMD 64X2 4000+ or Pentium D 820
(or faster)
2.0 GB DDR2 WinXP Pro Quadro 560 PCIex w/ 128 megs RAM 160 GB System drive SATA RAID 0 (2x160 GB), G-Raid or SCSI Drives
Dual-Core Processor 720p & 1080i HDV editing Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 or faster 2 GB DDR2 WinXP Pro Quadro 1500 PCIe w/ 256 megs RAM 250GB system drive SATA RAID 0 (2x250 GB), G-Raid or SCSI Drives
Dual Dual-Core Processor 720p & 1080i HDV editing Dual Dual-Core Xeon 4 GB DDR2 WinXP Pro Quadro 3450 PCIe w/ 256+ megs RAM 250GB system drive SATA RAID 0 (4x250 GB), G-Raid or SCSI Drives

We recommend nVidia Quadro based graphic cards for video editing because of their superb OpenGL support.
Avid Liquid Edition, Adobe After FX, Avid Xpress Pro & Boris FX all take advantage of OpenGL. You will see more & more video editing software take advantage of OpenGL GPU power as new versions of NLEs get released. This is the key the reaason why we recommend Quadro cards over less expensive 3D gaming cards. While you can do fine with a 3D gaming card, Quadro cards are designed & engineered for this kind of work - & the NLE engineers are optimizing their applications to take advantage of this GPU OpenGL power.

For video editing the Videoguys recommend the following RAID storage configuration:

  1. SATA Boot drive (100GB or larger)
  2. Pair of Identical SATA drives striped in a RAID0 configuration (2 x 250GB = 500GB)
  3. (optional) 4th SATA drive (40GB or larger) for back-ups, digital photo library, MP3 library

For even more in depth information on optimizing &/or building your own HDV workstation, check out our main Tech Support page.

HDV Hits Its Stride
Event DV by Anthony Burokas

More cameras, more features, more choices–here's a recap of how we got from a one-camera HDV market to a wealth of choices, & a breakdown of how the models differ from one another & the features of each that serve the event videographer best.

The days of HDV being a one-horse race are long behind us. It's been less than two years since Sony launched the HDR-FX1 & made HDV viable for videographers, but the days when JVC's GR-HD1 was the only game in town—& a single-CCD, losing game at that—seem like eons ago. The hot handheld market just received a new batch of HD camcorders with the slew of IBC announcements, &, with one more on the way from Panasonic, the selection of prosumer HD camcorders has become quite bountiful.

Try to think all the way back to the summer of 2006, when we had only about five different models of HDV & prosumer HD camcorders. We had the venerable Sony HDR-FX1 & HVR-Z1U; the flexible Panasonic AG-HVX200; the diminutive & consumerish Sony HDR-HC1 & HVR-A1U; & two much bigger models, the Canon XL H1 & JVC's GY-HD100U

Choosing an HDV Camera
DMN Buyers Guide By Heath McKnight

Heath McKnight discusses HDV camcorders from JVC, Sony & Canon

The HDV (high definition video) format is certainly a new technology, only 3 years old & already in the second generation of cameras (the Sony HVR-V1U & HDR-FX7, & the JVC GY-HD100 come to mind), but it was widely adopted much faster than even the perennial mini-dv format, which is still actively used. As such, accessories, non-linear support & more came fairly quickly. But there are still many who haven't decided to test the waters, or take the plunge into the new world of high definition. We hope to help you underst& HDV before diving in.

This article's goal is to help with your decision of what camera is right for you. We'll be taking a look at the many models offered by JVC, Sony & Canon (the fourth company that supports HDV, Sharp, has yet to release a unit, over three years after joining the others), & giving you enough information to help you make a solid decision.

Videoguys NAB 2007 Report Part 1 "A" is for Adobe, Apple, & Avid

This year's NAB started for us on Saturday, April 14th, two days before the actual show opened! We spent our weekend attending dealer and user events for with our vendors. The advantage of these events is that you get to spend a good amount of time watching presentations about the road map and new products for each company. These meetings are very cool and they tend to set the tone for the coming week. While Adobe, Avid and Apple all had very exciting news to share, we walked away realizing that while there was lots of sizzle, we had to dig a little bit deeper to find the steak. By the end of the show it was clear to us that our industry is at an interesting crossroads. read more...

Videoguys NAB 2007 Report Part 2 "B" is for Boards & More..
Plenty of New Hardware

One of the things I like best about NAB is the chance to see all the new hardware coming down the road for video editing and production. Over the past few years computers have become so powerful that we can edit DV footage extremely well with just software alone. With the move to HD the software can handle the footage, but it takes some extra hardware to get the job done right. This can be as simple as some additional storage, an I/O board or a hardware accelerator. At this years NAB there were some very exciting hardware developments. read more...

Videoguys HDV Resource Center
Videoguys Top 10 products of 2006 2006 was a transitional year for digital videographers. While we had several very new & exciting products, they were more evolutionary then revolutionary. In fact, my most revolutionary new product of the year isn't even a video product. It's the new Intel Core 2 Duo dual-core CPUs. With the introduction of these new CPUs, in both Apple & Windows computers, we are now getting an incredible level of CPU power & performance at very reasonable prices. With them we can take video editing & production to the next level - & that level is High Definition.
