Many of you may know that for single stream DV footage all you need is a single UltraDMA EIDE drive. So why do you need a VideoRAID for the DV500. The answer is actually quite simple. For real-time effects you need enough throughput for both video streams and the effects. That works out to 3 times your data rate. For the DV500 that is over 10 megs per second!
As a test I tried using a single 17GB UltraDMA drive with the DV500. What I found was that as long as the drive was less then half full, it worked well. Once I used up more then 50% of the drives capacity I started running into problems. Transitions became unstable, Premiere got sluggish, and playback would jitter. These problems were magnified if I had a clip at the beginning of the drive making a real-time transition to a clip in the over 50% full portion. If you plan on making short videos that use up less than half your drive space and have very few real-time effects, you can operate the DV500 with a single UDMA drive.
If you plan on using the DV500 to it's full capabilities, get a VideoRAID SCSI, FastTrack66 or UW SCSI drive.

easy with the DV500 from Pinnacle Systems. The powerful real-time editing capability and
state-of -the-art MPEG video technology allow you to quickly produce professional video

The DV500 ships with the popular
Adobe Premiere RT5.1 software for editing your video into a professional finished
production. Premiere RT5.1 takes advantage of the dual stream technology of the DV500

When the video project is complete you can export the movie as a
MPEG-2 IPB video stream with the included export capability of the DV500. Once the
movie is in an MPEG-2 format, it is ready to be imported into the Minerva Impression CD
Pro CD-ROM video authoring system.
the Minerva Impression CD Pro software allows you to author fully
interactive multimedia video titles that can be viewed on any PC with a CD-ROM drive. A
special player isautomatically placed on the CD-ROM to ensure that no cumbersome down

The final CD-ROM video disk image can be burned to your master CD
with the export to CD tool in the Minerva Impression CD Pro software. Alternative CD-R
application are available for use in creating other CD-ROM video such as VideoCD. These

DV500 allows for capture, edit and playback of first generation quality
DV material. DV500 does not touch the digital video stream and lets you edit on a
1:1 copy of the material stored on your DV tape. That’s exactly the same quality
level recorded in your DV camcorder. Every bit on the tape is identical to the
bit copied and stored on the PCs hard disk. You can even take advantage of the
analog input of DV500 and capture any analog source material into the high
quality DV format. All editing steps will proceed in native DV. Once your
production is completed you choose between: output to a DV tape, analog tape,
creating CD or DVD (MPEG-2 format), or output to any file. With others you need
to choose between DV or MPEG-2 editing, where analog captures are encoded to
MPEG-2 and digital material stays in DV format. Imagine what happens if you are
going to mix both. Quality decreases while transcoding and enormous rendering
times apply.
Conclusion: DV500 is the appropriate solution for today' s editing and distribution format.
DV500
can capture and edit files of any length up to 12 Terabytes. This is the capacity
of about 1300 9GB hard disks. Other competitive cards segment each video capture
to 2GB portions. A very outdated method. (There are some limitations
encountered with the current Windows 98 OS, where captures may be limited to 4GB
- this is expected to be eliminated in Windows 2000 and future
releases.)
Conclusion: DV500 works beyond any file size limitation
DV500 is equipped with 3D effects within the FreeFX software.
All effects are accelerated by the 3D engine of the installed VGA card.
FreeFX can take advantage of future 3D accelerator cards and keeps
customers at the latest performance level. Innovations in 3D technology can be
supported in the FreeFX software, so the DV500 can be updated with newer and
greater 3D effects. Some competitive products provide 3D effects only with a
specific graphics card and the user is restricted to the 3D performance and
effect capabilities of this graphics card.
Conclusion: With future software upgrades, DV500 provides always the latest and best enhanced 3D effects.
DV500 can superimpose (overlay) video on
video or graphics on video with real-time transparency control. Real-time
playback is always guaranteed if DV video clips or bitmaps are used. Due to the
native editing mode of DV500 output quality is input quality. No quality
decrease occurs during real-time playback. Some other cards claim that they
offer a better quality - but it can't be better than native!
Conclusion: DV500 offers advanced real-time technologies at the highest possible quality level.
The DVTools software included with the DV500
automatically scans any DV tape and finds all records on this tape. DVTools
creates a table of contents of each DV tape with thumbnails and timecode of all
the scenes on the tape and holds that information in a database. In offline
mode, the customer can choose various scenes from different tapes for the
production. During capture, DVTools calls for the tapes and transfers the clips
to the hard disk for further editing. With DVTools the customer always has a
complete overview about the assets on the tape. Competitors provide neither tape
scan or tape archiving features and do not take advantage of these kind of
device control options.
Conclusion: DV500 offers user friendly and fully automated tape control and archiving features that others don't have!
DV500 is
equipped with the powerful rendering and playback engine INSTANT
Video. This plug-in for Adobe Premiere takes
care of all rendering tasks on the timeline. INSTANTVideo's intelligent detection
mechanism renders only those parts of a video which are not playable in
real-time and stores them to a file. Rendered and captured material can be
played back directly from the timeline using cut list playback. The support for
non real-time segments is especially useful when the editor works with plug-ins
like Hollywood FX which may not be hardware accelerated. Some competitive
products lose their real-time capabilities each time a non-real-time effect is
used, so the whole timeline needs to be rendered and stored to a
file.
Conclusion: DV500 offers a much better performance playing back the complete timeline.
DV500 is dedicated to DV and takes advantage of the DV Codec to work
in native DV mode. Also, captures from analog sources are encoded to DV and can
be played back immediately to DV. Some competitors offer a combination of DV
and MPEG-2 I-Frame Codecs that allow both for data rates up to 25Mbit/s. Whereas DV
is only transferred through the 1394 connection, analog signals are always captured
to MPEG-2. Since MPEG-2 is not as efficient as DV when using MPEG-2 I-Frames,
the quality of captured analog material is not as good as the quality when using
DV at the same data rate.
Conclusion: The quality of DV500 beats the competition!
DV500 is in line with all the prosumer/consumer products from Pinnacle
Systems. Install one card, install the driver - you're ready to edit! All
special effects software is nicely integrated into Adobe Premiere, and customers
get a seamless workflow with well integrated functionality. Other products
require a two card solution and can be quite difficult to install. For many
customers, it's inconvenient to change the VGA card and install a video editing
system... a clear disadvantage for the typical customer who is not a computer
expert.
